Miles Without Stiles 4: Scout Scar

Details

Route type: For some. A short, steep walk to one of the best views across the entire southern lakes - OS Explorer Map OL7

Distance: 0.5 km, 0.3 miles

Start point: Lake District National Park car park - grid ref. SD 488924

Turning point: Wooden bench - grid ref. SD 486924

Facilities: None on route

Getting there: Car: From Kendal Town Hall, turn left up Allhallows Lane and continue for 2.5 km. After a sharp bend to the right, the car park is on the right as the road starts to go downhill.

Route

From the car park, take the path on the right down to the road (gradient 1:10). Take care crossing the road and go through the wooden gate. The original metal kissing gate is to your left.

The path rises steeply, at 1:6 gradient for over 100 metres. There are two resting places on the way up. The improved path ends where it bends sharply to the left. Through the trees, the low lying fells from Kendal to Windermere stretch before you. The higher fells behind you are Coniston Old Man on the left, the classic Langdale skyline of Bowfell and the Langdale Pikes and Kentmere Horseshoe on the right.

A rougher path, suitable for robust pushchairs, leads to a wooden bench and a great outlook. The more adventurous could continue on to 'The Mushroom' - a shelter which has a view finder for all the fells, plus Blackpool Tower to the south, if you are lucky enough to be up there on a very clear day.
