Autumn is a wonderful time of year in the Lake District National Park. As the trees turn various shades of red, reflecting in the lakes and the bracken on the fellsides turn russet coloured there’s never been a better time to get out and about on walks, cycles, boat and bus rides.

This week, Members of the National Park Authority agreed to open a consultation on proposals to make the financial savings required to secure future services and practical work across the National Park. Like many organisations and businesses, the National Park Authority has been financially impacted by the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, leading to a budget deficit of £1.2m for 2021/22.

At today’s Authority meeting the Lake District National Park decided not to adopt the Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) following the Marine Accident Investigation Board’s (MAIB) recommendation, as the scheme is not an effective comprehensive method of addressing the important issue of boat safety.
The weekend’s severe weather has had a significant impact on Cumbria and our thoughts are with all communities affected. We are part of a countywide flood recovery programme and we are currently helping to assess the impact on our communities. We will be working with partner organisations to set about tackling, what is certain to be, a lengthy and sustained recovery to restore our National Park.
