Welcome Back - Please Visit Safely

Car Park Status and Visitor Attractions

Welcome to the Lake District. If you are traveling around the National Park in a vehicle, please help us keep the Lake District safe for  other visitors and our communities.

  1. Find somewhere fantastic to visit. Lots of exciting attractions are open. VisitLakeDistrict have lots of suggestions for a great day out.
  2. Don't park anywhere outside a car park place. Emergency vehicles may need to travel at speed down a road, and roadside parking creates problems for them. Don't obstruct gateways: farmers are busy and need to be able to pass through gates to reach their animals at all times.
  3. Paying for parking Charging arrangements and payment options vary. It's advisable to carry coins and bank payment cards. Use your bank card contactlessly where possible. At some car parks it is possible to pay online.
  4. Keep to social distancing - no more than 6 people can meet from multiple households even outdoors.
  5. Please always take your litter home. Light no fires or BBQ's.
  6. Outdoor activities and sports: Don't take risks. Now is not the time for pushing your limits. Don't put rescue teams and emergency services at risk.
  7. Don't use car parks for your overnight accommodation. Wild camping is prohibited, and camping is not allowed at any car park in the Lake District. Don't risk a fine. Our campervan and motor home page has details on how to overnight legally

Patrols update this page from 09:00 - 17:00

The Southern Lakes area has traffic delays due to a diversion at J36 of the M6. The A6 from Carnforth into Kendal and the South Lakes has long delays.

The area around Rydal and Pelter Bridge is extremely busy at weekends and in high season. Please only park in designated car parks. If car parks around Rydal are full, consider parking in Grasmere or Ambleside, which are very handy for walks and activities in the Rydal area.

The road along the East Shore of Coniston has now been reopened by Cumbria County Council. Please park responsibly, emergency vehicles need access along this road.

The weather: Check detailed local weather forecasts on Weatherline, and plan your trip and activities accordingly. Weather conditions in the Lake District can vary enormously over just a few kilometres, and can change considerably throughout the day. Whilst it might be fine in a valley, conditions can be extremely challenging at higher levels. The mountains will still be here on a better day so, if in doubt, reschedule.

Water activities on the Lake District's lakes, rivers and tarns: Some shores get very busy. Check which activities you can do on each lake. Don't take risks in the water, which can be very cold and with hidden hazards below the surface. There are no lifeguards to help if things go wrong.

Avoid Red Areas - go to Green Areas
