It gives Kendal residents and visitors the chance to enjoy spectacular cultural happenings. And have fun!

What happened at Lakes Alive last year?

Lakes Alive Bird Hive

Lakes Alive 2017  was the biggest public celebration for the Lake District’s World Heritage Site taking place over three days around Kendal from the 8th-10th September 2017, highlighting the internationally significant cultural landscape of the National Park.

Thousands of people attended the festival which brought amazing art, activities and performance to Kendal, from Steve Messam’s iconic Sculpture ‘Keep’  to vibrant dancing with Folk Dance Remixed and stunning performance from the Spark! Drummers.

A major highlight was Pete Johnson’s Shipping Forecast at Kendal Castle, visited by thousands of people between Friday and Sunday where they gathered to watch the sun go down and the lights illuminate like a ‘hill full of shooting stars’

“It was wonderful weekend. I take my hat off to our audience especially on Sunday for braving the horrible weather. But nothing seems to put them off joining the party!

We’ve been thrilled by the feedback – the Spark!  procession up to Kendal Castle was a special moment that people will remember for years.” - Phillippa Haynes, Festival Director

When and where will this happen?
