Buttermere shuttlebus from Cockermouth

Catch the free shuttle bus from Cockermouth to the beautiful Buttermere valley, every day this summer from 17 July til the 5 September.

Park and ride

Park at Memorial Gardens in Cockermouth, just £5 all day.

  • Catch the bus from Main Street, Cockermouth, East bound bus stop. No need to book, just turn up!
  • Well-behaved dogs are welcome aboard.
  • 16 seater mini-bus with room for 1 wheelchair.
  • The bus will drop off and pick up in between marked bus stops where safe to do, just let the driver know.

Connecting bus services at Cockermouth and Buttermere

From Workington you can catch the X4/5 which runs to and from Cockermouth every hour

From Buttermere you can catch the 77/77A to Keswick, via Whinlatter and Honister. The last 77A for Keswick via Whinlatter departs Buttermere at 18:24 and can then connect with the X4/5 in Keswick to get back to Cockermouth if you want a longer day in Buttermere.

You can walk all around Buttermere lake, its about 7km and takes around 3 hours. The walk is relatively easy and level with a great 'reward for effort' ratio. The views mean that your photos make it look like you've been somewhere much more rugged!
