Looking for a stylish escape in the Lake District? Somewhere special and just little unusual to impress your loved one. Here's a list of small-but-perfectly-formed boutique hotels in the area. Bonus: some of them offer exclusive extras for our Travelzoo members.
Where: Watermillock, Ullswater
Why we love it: This is the latest property from the team behind Watergate Bay Hotel in Cornwall. Set in 18 acres of grounds, with a private lake shore and views over Ullswater and the fells, Another Place mixes boutique styling with an active ethos. Stand-up paddleboarding, sailing and wild swimming are all on offer, meaning it draws a youthful, sporty crowd, with plenty of young families too. A fab alternative to more traditional properties and great fun all round. Find out more
Why we love it: This chic hotel, housed in a Georgian property on Keswick’s Market Square, opened in 2015 and has been attracting rave reviews and scooping up awards since day one. Just a 10-minute walk from Derwentwater, it has a distinctly Scandinavian air, with Cumbrian-made beds and rain showers in all of its 34 rooms. The Brossen Steakhouse specialises in dry-aged steaks served with sides such as roasted bone marrow, beef-dripping chips or truffled mac and cheese. Find out more
Why we love it: This listed Victorian property brings all the style and panache that you’d expect of the Laura Ashley name. Think elegant furnishings, lush fabrics, grand chandeliers and classic designs combined with modern features such as a glass reception area. There’s also an indoor pool, a stylish cocktail bar, two restaurants and, as you can see from the main picture at the top of this page, some spectacular views over Windermere. Travelzoo members gets £20 of exclusive extras here too. Find out more
Why we love it: This converted 19th-century lodge in the Northern Lakes has sweeping views of the fells, an AA-Rosette restaurant and nine individually styled rooms. Each one is named after a local fell (for example, Randel Crag, Ullock Pike) and all feature en-suite bathrooms and flat-screen TVs. Some rooms have 4-poster beds. This area of the Lakes is best known for its mountain scenery and variety of walking routes – the hotel is close to Bassenthwaite Lake and sits at the foot of Ullock Pike. Find out more
Why we love it: This former Edwardian gentlemen's residence, with sweeping views of Windermere, simply oozes character. It’s intimately sized with 24 rooms, all of which have their own unique style. The 2-AA-Rosette Lake View Restaurant showcases locally sourced produce, and there is a cosy lounge offering classic afternoon teas. It’s set in five acres of landscaped grounds, 25 minutes' walk from Bowness, and a 30-minute drive from Ambleside and Wordsworth's Dove Cottage in Grasmere. Find out more
