Whether you’re a seasoned pro or first-time explorer, it's time to discover Ullswater like never before. Take to the water for an up-close experience or put your boots on and venture out on one of the beautiful walks in the area. Magical tree trails, relaxing rolling hills and dramatic fell top explorations await you, so let Ullswater enchant you with all that it has to offer.

Pooley Bridge to Aira Force walk

For ease and plenty to see, the 6.5 mile route from Pooley Bridge to Aira Force is perfect for any walker. The route is packed full of points of interest, from Maiden castle to Watermillock church, a quintessential Lake District building. The walk goes on to Swinburn Park where you’ll find the path meanders through a forest that’s just waiting to be explored. Catch yourself gazing upwards, open-mouthed, at the beauty and quietness that falls upon this part of the walk.

After this point, the walk splits into two routes. Take on the summit of Gowbarrow to the upper reaches of Aira Force or go around instead and get close-up views of Ullswater and the distant rising mountains. Why not double back so you can experience both routes! To end the walk, you'll have the reward of a well-earned rest at memorial seat. Ideally situated on the grand balcony, let the impressive panoramic views take the lead. Why not see if you can spot Lyulph’s Tower somewhere in the distance?

Aira Force waterfall

It’s the famous site around Ullswater known for its wonder; a location where beauty and power collide. Admire the sheer size of the 70-foot main fall and the sound of the cascading water. It's a pure spectacle, and if you're super lucky you might catch a glimmer of the elusive Aira Rainbow!

Explore the lake

Head to Glenridding for the best lake experience. Whether you kayak or canoe it's entirely up to you; and yes there’s a difference! If you’d like to pick up a new skill or just need a quick refresher, classes are on offer before you paddle the water.

Small sailing and motor boats are available for personal use for you to experience Ullswater at your own pace. Of course, don’t forget the iconic steamers which travel the full length of the lake daily. They’re the perfect option if you’re looking for a more leisurely lake experience.

Fells and trails

For experienced climbers and ramblers, there are plenty of challenging routes to traverse. Place Fell just outside of Glenridding is a climb that has it all with a selection of routes available for most abilities. For those climbing up for the spectacular views alone, follow the established path which leads directly to the summit.  If you’re after more of a challenging ascent, the course of crags and steep rocky screes act as the ultimate assault course to the top.

The stand-out climb for the experienced climber is Helvellyn, a 2 hour walk from Glenridding. The ascent via Striding Edge is truly spectacular, and as you clamber up onto the narrow ledge, you’ll be provided with incredible vistas. Be prepared with walking boots and all the necessary safety equipment. You’ll feel like you’re literally walking on top of the Lake District. Walk the Ullswater Way

This 20-mile loop around the entire lake is the best way to take in the whole area. With its circular route, you can set off in any direction you want. Well-marked and with the Lake always next to you; you’re not going to get lost. It’s the jewel in the crown walk but don’t forget your walking boots, it can be a muddy one!

Refuel at FYR restaurant

If you’ve worked up an appetite after all that outdoor adventure, then dine at FYR, North Lakes Hotel & Spa’s brand new restaurant which opened its doors in May 2018. Inspired by the local area, there’s an entirely new look to our restaurant.
