Alzheimer’s Society is the only UK charity that campaigns for change, funds research to find a cure and supports people living with dementia today.

The Trek26 challenge takes people on an epic 13 or 26 mile trek in one of six breathtaking locations across the UK. Hundreds of people take on the challenge, walking to stop dementia in it's tracks.

Gavin took on a tough Trek26 challenge in the Lake District last year.

After Gavin’s mother Isobel was affected by dementia, he made it his mission to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society.

Here's Gavin's story.

"I have decided to take part in Trek26 for Alzheimer’s Society because my mum, Isobel, died from Alzheimer’s in August 2017, just three days before her eightieth birthday.

My mother’s experience of dementia

While her death was peaceful, the days and months leading up to it were not. We lost her years before she died and the pain my father went through watching the woman he loved disappear and change before his eyes was immeasurable.

It’s great to think that I will be raising funds to help support other people living with dementia like my mum now and to fund research to one day find a cure.

Taking on Trek26

I took on a Trek26 challenge last year and I was really nervous – I had no idea what walking 26 miles would be like and I was doing it on my own. But I posted on Facebook every mile to say thank you to my sponsors by dedicating each mile to some of them.

I was surprised when people started donating while I was walking. People I didn’t even know that well, people who had already given, people who had given personally but were watching my progress at work.

The buzzing in my pocket when the Just Giving app told me someone else had donated helped me get round. Some of my friends asked me to share my location with them on my phone and they surprised me along the route by meeting me.

I can't bring my mum back, but I can try to make sure no one goes through what she did again.’

Gavin is taking on an epic 26 mile challenge again for Alzheimer’s Society in 2019, joining hundreds of other trekkers walking to beat dementia this summer."
