Local Plan: Landscape, wildlife and heritage

The Lake District is one of the world’s finest cultural landscapes. The spectacular landscape, wildlife and cultural heritage of the Lake District is unique, and it entirely underpins how the area functions economically, socially and environmentally.

Landscape, wildlife and cultural heritage are the key elements of National Park designation, and UK Government regard them as conferring the highest status of protection to the landscape and natural beauty. Likewise, UNESCO hold the cultural landscape in the highest regard recognising its Outstanding Universal Value and the combined works of nature and man that have shaped the evolution of the Lake District.
