Who supplies the forecast?

The Met Office forecasters prepare the content and figures and then feed it automatically to this website.

The Lake District National Park Authority Fell Top Assessors report winter conditions between November and March.

When is the forecast updated?

Once a day, usually around 4am in the morning.

Why are you closing the website on Saturday 27 February?

We need to carry out some essential technical maintenance this Saturday for most of the day. We’ve scheduled this for Saturday as it’s our quietest day. The site should be back up by 7pm GMT. The nature of the technical maintenance means we can’t put up a “Sorry, we’re closed” message but there has been a message on the site since Thursday warning users.

Cost of calling Weatherline

The 0844 number costs 5p per minute for UK BT customers. The price from non-BT phone lines will vary. A call to Weatherline lasts around 2 minutes. No profits are made on the call – the 1p per minute that comes back to Weatherline goes directly towards our line rental.

Old forecast? - try clearing your cache

Information is fed into Weatherline directly from the Met Office, and embedded into the page. If the forecast doesn't display, you may need to clear your cache.

Your 'cache' is the web pages your computer stores in its memory. When you demand a page, to save time, your computer remembers it already has a version of this page saved locally and doesn't need to go online. However as the Weatherline forecast is updated in 'real time', your computer needs all the current information.

Clearing these temporary files varies, but in Internet Explorer on a PC go to Tools / Internet Options / and under Temporary Internet Files click the Delete Files ... button. Or use your Help facility and type in clear cache. Then press F5 to refresh the page.

How can I look at historical weather data?

We don't keep records but you could try Wild Bryony Weather Station Records in Portinscale (opens in new window).

Where can I find out wind direction and other information?

For the South East of the National Park, try Mirefoot Weather Station (opens in new window) between Kendal and Windermere. It also features dew point, UV index, barometer and rainfall.
