As dark days grow longer and the weather turns wintry read about the different ways we can help you stay safe on the Lakeland fells.
Preparation is vital for safe winter walking. Taking the right clothing and equipment, and knowing how to use a map and compass are essential to reduce risk. We run a number of basic navigation courses throughout the year. You can check dates and details on our events calendar. There's lots of information on our checklist for walkers page to help you prepare for those fabulous fell days. Mountain rescue websites are a valuable resource too.
We're used to rapidly changing weather conditions here in the Lake District and know how easy it is to get caught out. Keep informed of the latest fell top conditions through our popular five day forecast service Weatherline. Viewed over 700,000 times a year it features up-to-date Met Office data. Or call 0844 846 2444 (Calls cost 7p per minute plus your phone company's access charge).
Two mountaineers record conditions from the summit of Helvellyn each day in winter. Long-standing fell top assessor Jon Bennett, willl be joined this year by Graham Uney. Read Jon and Graham's detailed reports on Weatherline between December and April each year. There's also a glossary to help with the technical terms! Follow them @LakesWeather on Twitter.
The Fix the Fells programme has been protecting the spectacular Lakeland fells from erosion by maintaining and repairing paths since 2001. As a result there are now hundreds of fell paths right across the Lake District in a better state of repair. Fix the Fells Ranger Richard Fox says: "repaired paths are naturally easier and more pleasant to follow and therefore contribute to safer walking."
Our guided walks programme runs from the end of March right through to our final Boxing Day walk. Join our guides and let them guide you safely on this beautiful winter woodland stroll. Meet 10.30am at Coniston Tourist Information Centre.
Our information centre staff will be able to help you source maps, walking equipment and much more to ensure you're properly equipped for the fells. Our centres are in Bowness, Keswick and Ullswater or visit Brockhole, The Lake District Visitor Centre in Windermere.
