Many thousands benefit annually from the fantastic support volunteers give through leading and inspiring people on guided walks in the Lake District's stunning landscapes.
Here are five great reasons why we nominate our Lake District heroes for National Parks Volunteer Awards (opens in new window) each year.
Our volunteer leaders come from all walks of life and from all over the UK. But they all share a common passion for this iconic place. And they're ready to share it with you!
It's not just the walks that take time. It's the planning, training and risk assessing too!
From myths and legends to local anecdotes and fascinating facts, you'll learn so much more from our guides about this world-class landscape and the people and their cultures who have lived here over the centuries.
No need to venture out alone! Leave the map and guide book behind. Our guides are trained and have years of experience walking in the high fells. Your health and safety comes first on any walk. Our navigation instructors are also ready to help you with basic safety instruction – we offer over 30 courses a year.
Our guides will help you discover hundreds of classic and little-known walks. From leisurely strolls to strenuous hikes up high.
Volunteers are the lifeblood of the UK's National Parks, and the annual national Volunteer Awards are a way of saying 'thank you' to all those who give up so much of their valuable time.
Our walk leaders donate thousands of hours to deliver our annual programme of over 400 guided walks and activities. In 2012 this fantastic group were awarded the group prize – the first time this was ever awarded! We also nominate those individuals who go the extra mile for us.
National Parks volunteering (opens in new window) doesn't just mean leading walks. It can range from school children on litter-picking taster sessions to those who mend fences and carry out path repairs over decades.
The Volunteer Awards are open to all volunteers and projects working within a UK National Park. Find out how you can nominate a special volunteer, group or project (opens in new window).
Group and project award winners receive £1,000 towards future volunteering activity. And winning individuals receive a choice of footwear from outdoor specialist and UK National Parks brand partner Merrell.
Closing date is 22 September and winners are announced in November.
