Getting there: No direct public transport. Car: A593 out of Ambleside and B5286 to Hawkshead. After 2 km take a lane left signposted Wray and follow to Red Nab car park
Route
This level walk along the wooded north western shore of Windermere is one of the most secluded and peaceful places along the 10.5 mile-long lake. The track heads north out of the car park and runs between the lakeshore and the mixed oak, ash and silver birch trees of Arthur Wood.
The views across the northern reaches of Windermere are fantastic, with Red Screes and Wansfell dominating. Look out for the white façade of the Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole, on the opposite shore. You soon reach an easily opened gate, bringing you to an open grassy area and High Wray Bay. This is a great place for a picnic and to watch the world go by.
The track continues on to Wray Castle, but it is steep and rough in places. This is a popular mountain bike route, so please be aware of cyclists.
