Impact of the Natural Environment and Rural Communities (NERC) Act 2006

Walna Scar was closed to mechanically propelled vehicular traffic from 2 May 2006 onwards. Read more about the NERC Act in Green Road Driving.

There are five exemptions to extinguishment of mechanically propelled vehicular rights on dual status routes. The onus is on the user to prove that rights should not be extinguished, based on one or more of the exemptions. This has been tested on Walna Scar by the Secretary of State, and no exceptions have been shown to exist. Therefore, it is a criminal offence to use a motor vehicle on Walna Scar without lawful authority.
