A Lake District taster day for anyone who wants to learn the basics of how to use an ice axe and crampons for winter walking. Lake District Fell Top Assessor, Graham Uney, will guide you through the basic techniques required for safe winter walking in the fells.

We provide all the technical gear for the day, but you are expected to have your own personal clothing and equipment. You will need*:
*The instructor reserves the right to refuse to take anyone on the day who does not have the correct personal clothing and boots. No jeans please, and avoid cotton baselayers.
The courses are run by Graham Uney who will be your lead instructor each day. Graham is the Fell Top Assessor on Helvellyn for Lake District Weatherline, so he knows the winter conditions out on the fells as well as anyone.
Subject to snow conditions, we are taking bookings for 1-day courses on the following dates, all starting at 08:30am:
There must be a minimum of 2 participants / maximum of 8 for the courses to run. All courses must be booked in advance.
Where there is insufficient snow to teach winter skills effectively on the day of a course, an alternative mountain navigation course will be offered on the day.

Hill walking and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death. *All participants must abide by instructions issued by the course leader, including health and safety instructions. Anyone failing to abide by these instructions may be asked to leave the event if, in the opinion of the leader, their actions could jeopardise anyone in the group.
*If anyone leaves an event before the finish, either by agreement or having been asked to, the leader's duty of care will cease at that point.
*We reserve the right to alter or cancel an event if it is not safe to proceed. This is most likely in the event of extreme weather conditions.
*We reserve the right to exclude participants if they are deemed by the leader not to be adequately prepared. Please check event details, which will state if suitable clothing is advised or required - particularly in relation to footwear and clothing. Please ensure you have enough food and drink for the type and duration of the activity.
*We reserve the right to refuse participation if it is considered a person's conduct puts either themselves or others in danger. We accept no responsibility for personal property that may be lost or damaged during the event.
*The event leader needs to determine, as far as possible, that participants are physically and mentally fit for that particular event.
*By attending the event you accept that the leader will ask you to declare, in confidence, any relevant medical information that may affect your performance.

A full refund or transfer onto another suitable Winter Skills course in 2017 will be given up to 7 days before the event.

If we need to cancel the event we will offer you a full refund (if applicable) or with your consent, transfer your booking to another Winter Skills Course in 2017.
In the event of adverse weather conditions
Most events have alternative routes in the event of adverse weather. The leader will make a decision on the day as to whether the event will proceed or an alternative be offered. His decision is final.
