Our walk grades

A walk's grade is based on the height gained, how long the walk is and the steepness and number of gradients. Please don't overestimate your fitness or underestimate how changing weather, hot or cold, can have on your ability and stamina. Under 18s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Easy

Short, usually flat walks around 2-5 miles / 3-8 km going at a leisurely pace. Paths may be uneven. These walks do not require you to wear walking boots.

Moderate

Medium length walks around 3 - 9 miles / 5 - 15 km. A reasonable level of fitness is required, on hilly ground with rising and falling levels.

Hard

Long, energetic walks up to 9 miles / 14 km. Some ascents or descents may be quite steep. A good level of fitness is required.

Strenuous

Long, full-day walks of up to 10 miles / 16 km. Some steep ascents and descents. A very good level of fitness and stamina is required.

Visually impaired suitability

Most Easy walks are suitable for people with visual impairment. Please ensure you are accompanied by a sighted guide during the event. Guide dogs welcome.

These boots are made for walking

Many of our walks include uneven, slippery or rocky ground and paths. Paths up on the fellsides in particular can be bumpy, and aren't smoothly tarmaced! We have labelled all walks with either 'appropriate footwear advisable' or 'appropriate footwear essential':

Appropriate footwear advisable

Wear sensible footwear for support and comfort.

Appropriate footwear essential

Walking boots, giving ankle support and grip, are essential on most moderate, hard and all strenuous routes. At the discretion of leaders, approach type footwear may be accepted, subject to route, weather and walker's experience. It is a condition that walkers with such footwear accept there may be additional risk. Leaders will decline walks if not appropriately equipped.
