Whilst visiting the Lake District and Kendal area this summer, be sure to pop into the Lakeland Arts venues. We have a fantastic range of attractions renowned for bringing award winning exhibitions from the cities to the cultural landscape offered in Cumbria.
We’ve also taken time to ensure our arts and culture attractions are available to all. This summer we have so many activities for all of the family to enjoy. Here are the highlights at each location.
Whether you’re on a cultural exploration of the Lake District or looking for something to entertain the kids, there’s plenty to see and do at the striking and distinctively unique, Blackwell Arts & Crafts House.
Perfectly positioned overlooking Lake Windermere, Blackwell is a beautiful example of Arts & Crafts architecture with stunning stained glass windows and handcrafted features.
This summer Blackwell celebrates the children’s tale Swallows and Amazons. Arthur Ransome’s novel is brought to life with an exhibition featuring props from the 2016 film, including the magnificent Swallow and Amazon boats perched upon the lawn.
Throughout the exhibition there are activities for the whole family to enjoy, with daily crafts, trails and family-friendly events. Discover an indoor recreation of the Walker children’s campsite on Wild Cat Island and join our story teller a 2pm on Wild Cat Wednesdays (every Wedneday in July and August) to hear the momentous tale.
In the words of the author himself: “Grab a chance and you won’t be sorry for what might have been”.
Our blockbuster exhibition at Abbot Hall Art Gallery this summer Painting Pop really does offer something for everyone.
Explore the gallery, taking in the stunning pieces of artwork from internationally renowned artists from the 1960s, to discover popular culture from this time.
We invite all the family to feel at home in our fully immersive 1960s inspired living room. Take a seat in an authentic sixties armchair, and watch the moon landing or listen to sixties music. Become part of the exhibition by including your memories on our timeline.
Painting Pop captures all the senses to fully experience this momentous decade; enjoy the delicious sixties themed food and drink in The Bakestone café.
Join us for a summer of nostalgia or to discover why the decade was so electrifying – there is something for everyone in Painting Pop.
There are fun daily activities for all the family at Abbot Hall, as well as a children’s menu in The Bakestone café and baby changing facilities.
Every Sunday at 2pm in August, join us for a special family friendly 1960s film screening. Please see our website for more details
At the Museum of Lakeland Life and Industry our feature exhibition is Fun on the Fells. Take a break from your lakeside strolls, treks and climbs and discover the history of walking and climbing in the Lake District. From early climbing pioneers through the politics of the right to roam to the modern walkers and climbers who flock to the area today. The exhibition features images and objects from the Museum’s collection and the archives of the Fell and Rock Climbing Club.
We've got a colouring sheet for kids to colour in and also a mountain graphic for you to share the highest point you’ve climbed to.
We also have a brand new Curators Office at the museum. Come and play Curator inspired games such as Museum Balderdash or Museum Timeline, and see if you've got what it takes.
