Coniston to Foxfield Trail
The Coniston to Foxfield recreational trail is a proposed project within the Cumbria Rights of Way Improvement Plan (CROWIP).
The project would develop a new multi-use trail between Coniston and Foxfield. It would provide a safe and attractive 10 mile surfaced route along an old railway track bed between Coniston and Foxfield for use by walkers, cyclists, horse-riders, including those with limited mobility.
We believe that the trail could deliver a wide range of environmental, social and economic benefits.
Feasibility study
In September 2009, we commissioned Asken Ltd - a Kendal-based consultancy - to undertake a feasibility study of the proposed route of the trail. The purpose of the study was to assess the feasibility of this proposal in terms of its likely cost and ‘deliverability’, taking into account landowner and local community views.
The study:
- Consulted landowners along the route of the old railway
- Consulted with other stakeholders in the local community
- Undertook a detailed survey of the old trackbed to identify what work would be needed to create the route, and costs estimated for doing this
- Considered alternative trail alignment options where these exist
Report
The report of this study is now available. Many thanks to everyone who gave their views during the consultation:
