Filming

The beautiful scenery of the Lake District appears in countless films and TV series such as 'Pandaemonium' and 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall'. Check out our Wallpaper for a taster of the scenery.

In spring 2006 Renée Zellwegger and Ewan McGregor filmed scenes for the 'Miss Potter' film - read more on our Beatrix Potter page.

Probably the most famous film set here is 'Withnail and I', filmed near Shap where two down-at-heel actors "come on holiday by mistake" in the 1960s. To track down exact locations, check out Mardale Inn's Withnail and I page (opens in new window).

Filming permissions in the Lake District

You can film on public land which includes public highways. However if you would like to film on private land, you need to ask the permission of the landowner. Ordnance Survey maps show the ownership of land by the National Trust and ourselves with symbols in the middle of areas marked with a purple boundary.

Major landowners include National Trust and United Utilities (both links open in a new window). If you would like to film on Lake District National Park Authority land, please contact us - details are on our Media enquiries page.
