Schools out, action in
As schools finish for the summer, adventure starts in the Lake District where six blockbuster weeks of action kick-off this weekend.
Saturday (17 July) sees the first of a long list of tantalising treats at the Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole, on the shores of Windermere, where canoeing sets the action off with a splash.
And with a whole host of happenings – many of them free – up for grabs, head of the Lake District National Park’s Adventure Out programme, Andrea Hills, urged families to find the fun.
Events are on offer most days and this weekend promises to be particularly lively. Sunday (18 July) sees Community Spirit Cumbria, a celebration of diversity featuring Caribbean and Brazilian music, marshal arts and even cookery.
Andrea said: “We’ve got an incredibly varied range of things to do across the school holidays. Alongside the old favourites are some great new activities and we’ve hit the ground running this weekend.
“Over six weeks people are welcome to join in a programme designed to cater for many ages and interests. Where else can you walk with a hawk, look at nature, art, learn circus and survival skills, listen to music on summer Sunday afternoons, and get geared up for safe cycling?”
Free classical music sessions on Brockhole’s stunningly beautiful terrace start on Sunday 25 July and run through to 29 August. There is archaeology, archery and art. And for those who just want to be entertained there’s cabaret too.
“Adventure Out is truly inspirational,” added Andrea. “It gives residents and visitors alike some fantastic opportunities not just to have a great time but to learn more about the countryside and our world renowned national park.
“We want as many people as possible to come along and sample what’s on offer. And, if they can come by public transport, including the regular boat launches, so much the better.”
Leaflets are being distributed around information centres and full details of the programme and booking details are on our events section. Phone 0845 272 0004 to find out more.
