Free holiday 'spirit' for everyone

Published on: 30 Jun 2010

Hundreds of children and parents are expected to kick-off the long summer school holidays next month with a free community event being hosted at the Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole on the shores of Windermere.

This is the fourth year for ‘Community Spirit Cumbria’ and organisers are hoping to build on previous years with music, dancing, cooking, martial arts, painting and massage activities – all taking place in the stunning grounds of Brockhole, between 12 noon and 5pm on Sunday 18 July.

The event is jointly organised by the national park authority, Cumbria Interfaith Forum, and AWAZ Cumbria, and is designed to showcase all that a multi-cultural Cumbria has to offer.

“We were delighted to be asked to host last year’s event, and although the weather was disappointing, everyone enjoyed themselves and the event organisers were keen to come back to Brockhole again this year,” said national park events co-ordinator Andrea Hills.

“The event really does seem to cater for everyone’s differing tastes, with Caribbean dancing and singing, Brazilian samba drum music, Gatka Martial Arts performances and the award winning Asian and Oriental cooking roadshows.

“And when you add in the usual activities at Brockhole, on the water, in the café and in the grounds, it does represent a fantastic way to begin the school holidays – and it’s all free,” she added.
