Top to bottom times three - Bass Reflections

Bassenthwaite Reflections
Three spectacular mountain to lakeshore routes revealing some of the Lake District’s best scenery are featured in lively new leaflets with a difference.Alongside walks from Dunmail to Derwentwater, Honister Pass to Keswick and Threlkeld to Keswick is a treasure trove of landmarks, history and wildlife information.
Produced by Heritage Lottery Fund supported Bassenthwaite Reflections, the three pamphlets are packaged together and cost £1. All proceeds go to key conservation ventures, Fix the Fells and the Lake District Osprey Project.
Karin Crofts, of Reflections, said she hoped the striking leaflets would have widespread appeal to walkers and everyone interested in the countryside and preservation.
She added: “We want to give people a more rounded visitor experience. Of course they’re going to enjoy walking amid such surroundings; Mountain to Lakeshore is designed to show how the iconic area involved, who influenced it, and provide compelling pointers along the way.
“And there will be some surprises too. For instance, the sprawling cairn in the middle of Dunmail’s dual carriageway is said to be the burial place of the Cumbria’s last monarch, King Edmund.”
Community landscape programme Reflections finishes at the end of the year and Karin said the Mountain to Lakeshore project would be a lasting testament to a campaign designed to encourage people to care for their surroundings.
Mountain to Lakeshore packs are available at Moot Hall information centre in Keswick and Whinlatter visitor centre.
“Although we are not the first to produce information in this way, we are incredibly proud of what’s been achieved here,” said Karin. “There’s a lot of detail, taking in famous Lakeland characters, including Beatrix Potter, our precious red squirrels, and well-known sights.
“The mapped routes and podcasts will be on our website to download on to GPS, smartphones and MP3 players in the near future. Digital innovations give fantastic opportunities to share classic trails with huge numbers of walkers.”
