Alien species Australian swamp stonecrop
listen

Help stop the alien invasion!

The alien plant Australian swamp stonecrop is threatening the Lake District’s wildlife.

It is also known as New Zealand pigmyweed and Crassula helmsii.

Why is Australian swamp stonecrop such a problem?

● It’s a tough invader, which can grow all year and out-compete our native plants.

● It grows rampantly on damp ground, lakeshores, and in water.

● It’s hard to kill and just a 1 cm piece can grow to dominate an area.

● It’s already causing damage in Bassenthwaite Lake, Derwentwater, Coniston Water, Grasmere, Rydal Water and Windermere.

How you can help

Because Australian swamp stonecrop can be spread by footwear, fishing tackle, boats and trailers, please take precautions to help stop its spread.

Please remove any plants or plant remains from your equipment when you leave the lake.

If you discover plant remains on your equipment at home, destroy them – by burning – before using the equipment again.
