Diversion of BW 206012 and BW 206040 Hole House, Barkbeth. Forum’s response: The Forum does not support all the proposals. Concerns of members:

Extend Bridleway 206012 through Hole House to link to Bridleway 206040 (points A – B) - no problem with the proposal.

The Bridleway out of the farmyard from C to D and onto the current permitted route (C-E-F-G-D), there is no problem with sections C-E-F through to G as I'm sure they take the old original bridleway route judging by the track width and now healed scar leading along the route to point G. Point G to D diversion however, is no more than a narrow path with steep sloping ground immediately to the west from the path edge. I would not like to go along on horseback, I think you would likely dismount!!! and lead the horse. On foot no problems

Divert the Bridleway 206040 to cross the bridge over Chapel Beck H-J-I rather than crossing through the ford (H-I) - No real problems with the diversion however if you were on a mountain bike you would definitely take the ford as it at the bottom of a hill, why cant we have both lines at this river crossing they are so close together.

So in summary it’s a yes to 1st and 3rd point. In regards to the 2nd point the current view of the LAF is not to support the diversion until an assessment can be made by someone with an equestrian background. Date: 23 September 2010.

Proposed public footpath creation from Public Road U5227, west of High Newton Reservoir onto Open Access Land, Parish of Upper Allithwaite. Forum’s response: The Forum supports the proposal; however there is distinct discomfort by a number of members.

The path leads to an area of Open Access where there is no clear route across (like to reach paths to gummers how etc as identified in the consultation). There is also wall that bounds this area of Open Access and there is limited access through this wall.

The path around the lower reservoir is not included.

Our recommendation is that due consideration is given to extending this footpath to one of the footpaths on the far side of Saskills and that the route is way marked. We would also ask that the path around the lower reservoir is included.

Proposed creation and diversion, Fix the Fells path, Borrowdale. Forum’s response: No response. Date: 23 September 2010.

Potential creation of bridleway/track at Garnett Bridge, Strickland Roger. Forum response: The Forum supports the proposal. One minor point is that anyone using the created route to join the existing bridleway may be tempted to go straight on when they reach the ‘crossroads’ (which leads to Garnett Bridge Wood, “the only sweet chestnut coppice in Cumbria” along a permissive footpath). Cyclists and horse riders need to turn left or right. Date: 23 September 2010.

2008 responses

Proposed diversion of footpath 575026 East View, Parish of Strickland Roger Burneside

The forum supports the response. 10 August 2008

Diversion of Footpaths 5104027 and 514026 and creation of new Footpath, Broad Oak and Town End Crosthwaite and Lyth Parish

Forum's response: There was divided opinion as a number of members liked the footpath through the farmyard. On balance the Forum welcomed the fact that a number of its suggestions had been incorporated in the new proposals.

It also welcomed the proposed changes and additions in the footpath network to the south west of the original proposal. Date: 18 May 2008

Diversion of Footpath 345005 at the Quiet Site Matterdale

Forum's Response: Whilst only a few members responded to this consultation they were generally in favour of the proposals. However, one member raised a number of detailed concerns which you have responded to by email.

The Forum would be concerned if the proposed improvements were not implemented. It feels that the diversion should not be confirmed until the national Park Authority is completely satisfied that these improvements have been completed. Date: 18 May 2008

Diversion of Bridleways 418025 and 418028 at Murthwaite, Parish of Muncaster

On behalf of the Lake District Local Access Forum, we welcome the suggestion to improve the original proposal. Whilst no member has been able to visit the site, we are sure it is an improvement.

Diversion of 345011 at Lowthwaite, Parish of Matterdale

The Forum has carefully considered the proposed diversion which reflects the actual route which we expect is used by all users at present and which is signed despite it not being on the definitive line. A number of members had concerns about the general principles raised by this proposal which will be discussed at a Forum meeting. The Forum supports the proposal as the diverted definitive line of the route will be easier to use in the future. - 28 January 2008
