This project near Windermere will develop a new route along an old carriageway, originally used by horse and cart to take Victorian tourists up to near the summit. The work will re-surface this old route and from there, a new, low gradient route will be created to the iconic summit view from Orrest Head. This will provide a rare opportunity for less able users to get to this wonderful viewpoint, much loved by the famous writer Alfred Wainwright, as it gave him his first-ever view over the Lake District mountains that he was to subsequently to fall in love with. The views of Windermere and the Lakeland fells beyond are, indeed, inspirational!
Overall cost: approx. £32,000 (£14,000 already secured).
