Environmental Land Management Service (ELMS)
What is ELMS?
The Environmental Land Management Service is a partnership between the Lake District National Park Authority, Natural England, National Trust, RSPB and Forestry Commission, supporting local farmers and land managers to secure grant funding throuugh Environmental Stewardship (opens in new window)
What is Environmental Stewardship?
This agri-environment scheme administered by Natural England provides funding to farmers in England who deliver effective environmental management on their land. Its primary objectives are to:
- Conserve wildlife (biodiversity)
- Maintain and enhance landscape quality and character
- Protect the historic environment and natural resources
- Promote public access and understanding of the countryside
- Protect natural resources
There are three elements to Environmental Stewardship:
- Entry Level Stewardship (Organic Entry Level Stewardship)
- Uplands Entry Level Stewardship
- Higher Level Stewardship
What are we doing?
Over the next three years the Lake District Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA) Scheme will be coming to an end and will be replaced by Environmental Stewardship.
The ELMS Team can provide advice and assistance on the range of stewardship grants available and how to apply for them.
In particular, we can help with filling in the application forms for the HLS scheme. Our specialist officers can also prepare the detailed ‘Farm Environment Plans’ that must accompany applications. Because of the amount of work needed, we have to charge for this part of the service. However, Natural England provides a payment towards this cost.
If a farm is not eligible for HLS then we can also provide advice and support in applying for Entry Level and Uplands Entry Level Stewardship.
