New visitor centre
The white house at Brockhole was originally designed as a holiday home in 1900. The original owners, the Gaddum family, were silk merchants in Manchester. Fitting a modern day visitor centre into an old building designed for a different use is not easy and it is also at the top of a hill.
A better location would be at the bottom of the car park near the adventure playground. This would be on the flat route for visitors arriving by boat from the new pier. This new build would include:
- a café
- retail space
- exhibition and small event space
- community areas
- central feature linked to adventure
- showcase sustainable building methods and operations and support local food, drinks and crafts.
Funding
The grant we had secured to cover the costs of this project was removed when the coalition government came to power in June 2010. We are currently working through options to be considered by the Brockhole Redevelopment Programme Board in late November 2011.
