Background, particular interests and hobbies:

John has lived in the isolated but beautiful Longsleddale Valley for 33 years with his wife Jenny, although for much of that time he has worked away from the area.  John lives in a Victorian former vicarage and, with his wife, is turning their small holding into a form of nature reserve which is sympathetic to their farming surroundings.

John is an engineer by profession and has spent most of his working life in the Utility Sector as a senior commercial manager/director mainly in the electricity and water industries before running his own management consultancy business for 3 years, prior to retiring.

Much of John's time is spent trying to protect and enhance the beauty and wildlife of this wonderful area, being Vice Chairman and Treasurer of Cumbria Wildlife Trust and in volunteering for this and other organisations.  Gardening and playing Bridge (Trustee of Kendal Bridge Club) are John's other major interests.  John chairs the Longsleddale Parish Meeting having been its unpaid Clerk for 9 years and supports the Upper Kent Local Area Partnership, having been its Chairman for 2 years.
