Background, particular interests and hobbies:

Educated at Eshton School, near Skipton and the Universities of Kent and Aberdeen (MA, LLM, LLD). Lived in Crook in the 1970s and worked as a solicitor for Westmorland and Cumbria County Council and the Lake District Special Planning Board.  

Solicitor and Legal Associate of the Royal Town Planning Institute. Emeritus Professor of Law, Aberdeen University and until recently a consultant in Planning and Environmental Law within a firm of solicitors in Aberdeen. Member of the main board of Scottish Natural Heritage (1998-2004) and Chairman of its East Areas Board. Chairman of the Scottish Access Forum (2000-2004).  Currently Chairman of the Paths for All Partnership.  

Enjoys fell walking.
