Born in Rotherham South Yorkshire and moved to West Cumbria in 1957.

After serving with the Household Cavalry 1958-1967, worked for Albright and Wilson in Whitehaven 1967-1994 as a Quality Control and Systems Officer, retiring at 55.

Served on St Bees parish council for 14 years and elected to Copeland Borough Council in 1991. Mayor of Copeland 2005-06. Elected in 2005 to Cumbria County Council representing Gosforth and Ennerdale division.

Interests include the Rotary Club, classical music, gardening, theatre and protecting wildlife and the countryside.
