Lake District open for Christmas - 18 December 2015

Published on: 18 Dec 2015

Businesses and communities are pulling together to encourage people to continue to visit the Lake District during the Christmas period and onwards.

Brockhole, the Lake District Visitor Centre, is open throughout Christmas and New Year offering festive activities including meet the huskies (19 and 23 Dec) and the Astral Circus show on Sunday (20 Dec).

Liz Moss, Head of Commercial Services at Lake District National Park, said: “Many businesses in the Lake District heavily rely on the support from local people and visitors during the Christmas and New Year period, so it’s important we let everyone know we’re very much open for business. While there are a few access restrictions in place, there are still many areas that are unaffected and alternative routes are available.

“We are providing a local Lake District information service throughout the Christmas period at our tourist information centres in Keswick, Bowness and Brockhole, and will be keeping our website updated.

“In support of businesses in those areas most affected by flooding, Lake District National Park car parks in Grasmere, Pooley Bridge, Ambleside and Glenridding are free of charge until the New Year. We hope this will encourage people to visit these areas, buy something from the local shops, eat in the cafes and help give these communities a boost to their New Year.”

If you are planning a walk, horse ride or a cycle trip in the Lake District National Park please take a look at our rights of way map link on www.lakedistrict.gov.uk/cumbriafloods which shows the status of rights of way in the Lake District and will be updated as we undertake more survey work.
Our rangers are continuing to work with those communities affected by flooding and we have placed cordons and signs where areas remain unsafe. It is important people respect these signs and not cross cordons. If you see bridges, paths or tree damage that needs reporting please call our contact centre on 01539 724555.
