Annual Inspection of Stickle Tarn

Published on: 24 Sep 2015

Preparation for the ten yearly inspection of Stickle Tarn will begin week commencing 21 September.

As part of the obligations of the Reservoirs Act 1975 we are required to carry out both annual and ten yearly inspections of Stickle Tarn using an independent qualified civil engineer.

To enable the required inspection of the dam wall, the appointed contractors, Mott McDonald, have requested that we reduce the water level at the dam wall down to c.900mm. We will let the water down through the scour pipes, designed for this purpose, with the water re-entering its natural water course of Stickle Ghyll and into Great Langdale Beck. This is how water from Stickle Tarn normally flows when it comes over the spillway of the dam. We anticipate this will take a few days ahead of the inspection.

We have secured the necessary approvals for this and will be monitoring things closely over the period to ensure that there is no adverse impact to the surrounding areas.

Following the inspection we will agree with Mott McDonald any necessary works/repairs we may need to carry out and will aim to tie this in with other routine repairs we have scheduled in for later this year.
