Retail and Commercial Development Manager

Would you like to lead our retail transformation? We have three National Park shops combined with information centres across the stunning Lake District National Park. We have a fourth managed by our team at Brockhole on Windermere that you would set the retail processes, performance benchmarks and direction for.

We are looking for a transformational change leader with a strong track record in retail operations to deliver a step change in our Park shops financial results.

Previously they have been run first and foremost as tourist information centres with the retail offering as an addendum. We are now looking to flip this on its head and make them self-sustaining through income receipts; and going beyond that, deliver contribution to plough back not for profit monies in to the work of the National Park.

Our information services provision is at the heart of what we do. Orientating visitors to explore, discover and inspire the Lake District National Park; but there is so much more we can do to offer locally sourced quality gifts and services led by a retail professional. Is that you?

Our shops currently offer information, sell tickets to national park and partner attractions and events on a commission basis; and sell digital screen advertising, gifts and snacks. In some sites they have room hire, demo days and other income streams. We are looking for someone to deliver a £114k uplift in net contribution over a 2 year transformation programme. Embedding retail performance standards and management techniques, coupled with fresh thinking on the development of new income streams.

Every pound we can make in contribution from these Park shops will be reinvested in to this special place.

You will exceed expectations against a balanced scorecard of customer (1M visitors to our shops per annum), financial and people metrics, looking to significantly out perform all of our targets whilst delivering great commercial performance and visitor experience.

With a solid retail business background you will have a track record of delivering results through performance grip, new income generation, cost reduction and market growth.

With a fantastic attention to detail you will set high standards for your team. You will have a proven ability to lead from the front, building strong relationships with all stakeholders and the ability to grow win win commercial relationships.

Our Park shops are a 7 day a week, 364 day a year operation. You will be expected to work 5 days (37 hours / week) across the 7 days. School holidays are our peak days, as are weekends, so you would be expected to lead from the front at these key times.
